    About Michael Volpone Silversmithing
I began my trade in Fred's Leather, a custom saddle shop, in Orange County, California in 1972. Fred was a very accomplished artist in the saddle business. I started out with performing the dirty part of the business, which was taking saddles apart and scrubbing the dirt and built up finish on the saddles, oiling them and then reassembling the saddles. As time went on, I was taught more and became more interested in the business, other than just a weekly check to keep my old car running! To my great surprise, It turned out I was pretty good at this old lost art, and I was even designing tooling patterns for belts and saddles. Around a couple years into working in the saddle shop, I was introduced to Harold Wage, from Wage's Silversmiths, also an extremely accomplished artist in his trade. Harold trained me as an hand engraver, which to this day, I still do all by hand, no air tools. I was blessed to be taught by these two masters, skills of a time gone by when things were all handmade. I have been designing and making custom, one of a kind pieces for over forty years, and I'm still learning tricks of the trade, and I am still as excited today as I was forty years ago, when I complete a piece. I love taking a blank piece of raw sheet of metal, whether it be sterling, gold, copper or bronze, and completing something that is a wearable piece of art.
